Hand Studies -Expression

A few weeks ago I decided to challenge myself into doing 100 hand studies from animation movies. There is an Instagram account I follow that belongs to an art teacher that lectures at ArtCenter in Passadena, CA. On this page, the teacher posts a lot of student work such as drawing exercises and assessments.

I found out that one of the exercises he asks students do to is to draw 100 hand expressions from animation movies. There is a website that has animation movies almost frame by frame – Animation screen caps and from the frames, students are supposed to “copy” it. This exercise is really helpful when it comes to understanding how hands can be almost 100% of the characters expression. It is also helpful to practice human hand’s proportions and perspectives.

According to the teacher, he gives his students 1 week to complete this task… I’ve been doing it for 2 and I don’t work on it everyday… But I am almost there!

Here is a sneak peek:

Obviously, after the first 20 hands, the whole process of drawing them becomes a bit faster. It was interesting for me to notice, on my life drawing classes, that hands became much easier to draw, and that was a part I was always avoiding drawing…

Hopefully I’ll finish this task soon because the next one is a bit more challenging… Its 300 face expressions!!! It looks like this:
